Bed Bug Bites vs Mosquito Bites: How to Tell the Difference

The practical differences

• Pattern: bed bug bites often run in a line or tight cluster of three or four; mosquito bites are scattered at random.
• Location: bed bugs bite skin pressed against the mattress — shoulders, back, arms; mosquitoes go for exposed skin, including ankles and face.
• Timing: you feel a mosquito bite as it happens; bed bug bites are painless and only itch hours later.
• Appearance: mosquito bites are puffy and fade within a day; bed bug welts are flatter, redder in the centre and can last several days.
• Sound: mosquitoes are audible at night; bed bugs are silent.

Confirming bed bugs

Strip the bed and inspect the mattress piping, the seams of the box spring, the headboard joints and the screw holes of the bed frame. You are looking for small rust-coloured spots (digested blood), black ink-like specks, translucent shed skins and live insects roughly the size and shape of an apple seed. A sweetish musty odour in the room is another indicator of a heavy population.

Why bed bugs need professional treatment

Bed bugs hide inside furniture joints, electrical fittings, skirting and mattress seams, and the eggs are glued in place and resistant to most sprays. A single missed pocket rebuilds the population within weeks. Effective treatment covers the entire room, not just the bed, and always includes a second visit timed to the egg hatch cycle of roughly ten to fourteen days.

What you should do before the technician arrives

• Strip bedding and wash it at the hottest temperature the fabric allows, then tumble dry.
• Do not move mattresses or furniture to another room — that spreads the infestation.
• Clear clutter from under the bed so the technician can reach every seam and joint.
• Vacuum the room and dispose of the bag outside immediately.
